Terry Curtis is and was Everything That is “Wright” About Prep Football

The news broke Monday that Terry Curtis, the head football coach of UMS-Wright would be retiring. (per, Simone Eli – WKRG – https://x.com/simoneeli_tv/status/1889023952552436134?s=46)

Curtis, a Mobile native who prepped at Murphy High School and attended college and played baseball at Auburn soon came home to do what he loves. Lead young people, and coach sports. His first job in the coaching profession was as a Junior Varsity Basketball coach and Football Assistant at BC Rain in 1973.

It was a long road to his first head coaching job but it finally came in 1989 at Shaw. Curtis’ Rebels missed the playoffs with a 3-7 record in his first year. It was his worst season as a coach. In year 3 the Rebels found the playoffs in the fall of ‘91 and Curtis was a placeholder for a playoff spot every year thereafter with the exception of 1998. 33 out of 34 seasons.

Curtis went on to spend 6 seasons at Murphy and 27 at UMS-Wright following his 4 year stint at Shaw. In 37 seasons, coach amassed a 361-105 record. Piling up 8 state championships, multiple hall of fame nominations, and a 3-peat along the way.

But why may you ask is Curtis everything “wright” about High School Football? Because every where he went, he won. You can say he won on the metrics of concrete victories. But I say he won in a different kind of way. He brought sub-communities within the Mobile Area together. If you ever hear from one of his former players whether it be a Shaw Rebel, a Murphy Panther or a Bulldog from UMS-Wright they all say the same things. That Terry Curtis made them a better person and that their schools were immensely better due to having the experience of Terry Curtis at the head of the football program.

Notorious for his one liners (https://x.com/benthomaspreps/status/1686748823727616000?s=46) and charming smile and southern drawl. The Local High School Football Community was better for having the experience of Terry Curtis in our neck of the woods.

A coach who can rally a community for a school, make young men better people in the game of life, and just flat out win on and off the field is a rarity in the sport. Terry Curtis checks all the boxes.

To Coach, Happy Retirement. Get after its tail!

Jim Nagy’s Departure from Mobile: A New Chapter Begins with the Oklahoma Sooners

A few weeks ago, the college football world buzzed with news that Jim Nagy, the Executive Director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl, would be leaving Mobile, to take on the role of General Manager for the Oklahoma Sooners football program.

This move marks the end of a transformative seven-year tenure at the Senior Bowl and the beginning of an ambitious journey with one of college football’s most storied teams.

Nagy’s time in Mobile was nothing short of remarkable. Since taking the helm in 2018, he elevated the Senior Bowl into a premier showcase for NFL talent. He has helped cement its reputation as the place where “the draft starts.”

With nearly two decades of NFL scouting experience—including stints with the Patriots, Seahawks, Chiefs, and Commanders, where he earned four Super Bowl rings—Nagy brought unparalleled expertise to the all-star game.

His leadership saw record-breaking draft numbers, with 110 players from the 2024 Senior Bowl selected, and fostered deep ties between Mobile and the NFL. His heartfelt farewell statement reflected gratitude for the city and the opportunity to steward a historic event, underscoring the personal and professional ties he built here.

Nagy now heads to Norman to tackle a new challenge. Oklahoma, coming off a 6-7 season in its SEC debut, is betting on his roster-building prowess and managerial skills to restore its championship pedigree.

Working alongside head coach Brent Venables, Nagy will oversee talent acquisition, player evaluation, and the complexities of NIL and the transfer portal—a role mirroring an NFL front office. As Mobile searches for his successor, Nagy’s legacy here endures, while Oklahoma fans eagerly await the impact of his seasoned eye for talent.

Dog Days of Sports: What I’m Watching on TV.

The football season has come to an end. Capped off by a dreadful and very lackluster Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the victorious Philadelphia Eagles.

This time of year the tv schedule for sports fans begins to slow down and if you are not a big fan of College Basketball or the NBA you may be left in that state of confusion where you are not sure what to watch on the good ol’ television.

This blog post will be to highlight the 5 items I’ve found myself watching on television in place of sports.

Before we get to the list… go ahead and subscribe to what I believe are the top 3 streaming services on the market today.

5. AMERICAN MURDER: GABBY PETITO

(Netflix)

It was the fall of 2021 and the true crime fad had a hold on America. When the Gabby Petito case emerged into the spotlight it quickly became a phenomenon. “Where is Brian Laundrie?” Many asked. Well if you had questions during the fall of ‘21 about the Laundrie/Petito case this true crime doc is sure to answer them. Streaming now on Netflix.

4. ZERO DAY

(Netflix)

A political thriller mini-series. This one will grip you with the hyper-realistic feel it has. An older president struggling with memory issues replaced by a younger female option. A country under attack by cyber hackers. This one is top notch and I highly recommend it.

3. WHITE LOTUS

(Max)

Just started this one but the drama/comedy tv series is an interesting one. Different plot lines for each season and an easy watch for the average viewer. To be fair, I’m still early in it so not sure where the plot is going quite yet but can tell it’s good.

2. THE TRAITORS

(Peacock)

This one is awesome. Based on the game mafia or werewolf. Instead load it down with reality tv stars and the drama ensues. If you like competitive reality shows where bonds mean everything this is the show for you!

  1. SEVERANCE

(Apple TV+)

This. This is it. Everything you could ever ask for in a television series. Drama. Love. Death. Deceit. Cinematography.

This is everything. If you don’t have Apple TV+ this is a reason to purchase a subscription. Written by Ben Stiller, starring Adam Scott. A TOTAL SMASH HIT. You must watch Severance. Weekly release television is making a comeback with this instant classic.

Sports World Starts to Slow; March Madness heats up!

Johni Broome celebrates in a 94-85 W over Alabama

As football season winds down it is now time for the most wonderful season of the year; March Madness.

Auburn took down Alabama 94-85 this past Saturday in what many are calling the game of the year in college basketball. It all but locked up a #1 seed for the Auburn Tigers. According to ESPN “Bracketology”. Although not an exact science, it’s often times reliable.

Coach Bruce Pearl’s team has by far the most Quadrant 1 (teams ranked 1-89) wins in the country. This leads to great favor amongst the selection committee.

However, other favorites as we creep towards March include the always picked and popular Duke Blue Devils of Durham, NC. They are led by Freshman and soon to be #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg.

Although the brackets are not quite set it seems to be a runaway at the top. AUBURN, DUKE, Alabama, and Florida seem far and away the favorites to win the entire tournament come March 20th when it gets underway.

Duke Freshman Cooper Flagg.

Who will you select to win the National Championship when it is time to pencil in your picks for March Madness?

Jack Bech Wins Senior Bowl in a Story So Good, Hollywood Couldn’t Write It

It was a Chamber of Commerce Day at Hancock Whitney Stadium. Not a cloud in the sky, sunny and 75.

25,000 fans packed the stands of the On-Campus Stadium for the 76th playing of the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

The story that would unfold next is something so good, Hollywood would struggle to write it.

The game itself honored the life and legacy of Tiger Bech, with all players participating wearing a special emblem on the back of their helmet repping the number 7. Jack Bech wore a special set of Tiger striped cleats for the game as well. Link to twitter images below.

The game was a back and forth battle all day, with the National team jumping out to an early lead and maintaining it for the better half of the afternoon.

Late into the game’s 4th Quarter the American Team took over possession after a big defensive stop.

It was a moment in which you just had a feeling something special was about to happen.

However, I doubt anyone could have predicted what came next.

As the American Team marched down the field in the 2 Minute Drill Offense, it seemed as if they may pull it off in a game they never led. But this momentum was stymied for a moment, after a few not so promising plays. The American team sat 4th and Goal at the 2 yard line with 7 seconds left.

Exactly a month to the day prior, The Bech Family had been informed of the news that their son, and Jack’s older brother, Tiger was killed in the New Orleans Attack on the morning of New Years Day. Tiger was 27 years old.

Martin “Tiger” Bech, Jr. was an avid traveler and a former college football player. Tiger wore the number 7 (7 seconds left.)

The snap on what would be the final play of the game came next and landed in the hands of Spencer Henigan, a Memphis TIGER. Henigan rolled to the right flat and found Jack who had switched his Jersey number to 7 for Senior Bowl week to honor his late brother for a walk-off Touchdown.

Bech overcome with emotion following a walk off touchdown

Bech was immediately overwhelmed, falling to his knees in the end zone. The entirety of both rosters surrounded him and celebrated the moment.

On Monday, Bech joined Nick and Jaret of SportsDrive on 105.5 WNSP to talk about the game and the moment. Below is the link.

Jack Bech is now flying up draft boards and attests the great successes of Senior Bowl week to his Lord and Savior and to his brothers life and legacy.

A feel good story unlike any other happening right here in our back yard!
